BridgeDummy from creator Nir Khutorsky, a member of the Israel Open Bridge Team, aims to bridge the gap between human intuition and mathematical certainty. Utilizing advanced simulation engines to replace bridge intuition with statistical certainty and running player decisions through thousands of simulated deals.

Puzzles. Challenges. Simulations

Ever wonder how your bid or opening lead would stand up to rigorous, data-driven analysis across thousands of possible layouts? Of course you have!

Enter BridgeDummy, a training platform designed to replace guesswork with hard evidence. Developed by Nir Khutorsky, a member of the Israel Open Bridge Team, the site is built to help serious players improve quickly. As Khutorsky puts it on the about page, “I experienced first hand how the gap between theory and practice holds players back, and I built BridgeDummy to be the training tool I wished existed when I was climbing the ranks.”

Practice That Works

The core mission of BridgeDummy is to help players improve through deliberate practice. The philosophy is simple: players improve fastest by making real decisions repeatedly.

Every puzzle on the platform is a genuine bridge scenario with multiple reasonable options. Instead of just testing convention knowledge, BridgeDummy builds pattern recognition and judgment by grading every decision against double-dummy optimal play. Today, the platform offers over 1,400 bridge puzzles across bidding and opening lead categories, utilizing both Matchpoints and IMP scoring formatsโ€”the same formats used in tournament bridge worldwide.

How it Works

Getting started on BridgeDummy is a straightforward process designed to get you into the action quickly. After a simple sign-up or login (free), you are presented with a clean, intuitive dashboard that serves as your bridge training hub.

Once logged in, you have six primary ways to sharpen your game:

Daily Challenge: Solve 20 puzzles daily and compete for a top spot on the community leaderboard. I started with this. The puzzles alternated between a bidding problem and a lead problem. My response was given up to five stars, and I was also shown how other participants bid or led, by percentage. So interesting! I scored 80/100 stars for my first challenge – apparently I’m better with my leads than my bidding! In the bidding challenges you have the option to view sample hands illustrating the success (of failure) of your choice. You can also hover to see hand distribution and point count of different bidders. And be sure to pay attention – some hands are IMPs and some are MPs.

Other offerings include:

  • Puzzles: Practice bidding and opening leads at your own pace with realistic, randomized scenarios.
  • Suit Combos: Master single-suit play techniques to find the best line under hidden-card uncertainty.
  • Weekly League: Play through 48 puzzles across five competitive tiers. Based on your performance, you can climb the ranks from “Clubs” all the way to “No Trump.”
  • 1v1 Challenge: Take on a friend or a stranger using the same 10 puzzles to see who makes the more mathematically sound decisions.
  • Simulations: The most advanced tool in the kit, allowing you to set specific constraints for every seat and run your own custom deal analysis.

And actually, while exploring I found another fascinating area: Ask an Expert. “Get Personal Advice from National Level Bridge Players.” Such a great idea and you can track your question and answers.

The Science of the “Best Play”

When you face a bidding or lead problem on BridgeDummy, you aren’t judged on a single lucky or unlucky result. Instead, the platform runs your decision through thousands of simulated deals that match the auction.

Using double-dummy analysis, it calculates the average performance of every possible choice. The result is a 5-star grading system that reveals the objective truth of the situation. It is a revealing experience for players of all levels to see how often the “popular” choiceโ€”the one most humans would pickโ€”is statistically inferior to a more optimal alternative.

The Diamond Economy

To power its most advanced features, BridgeDummy utilizes an in-app currency called Diamonds (๐Ÿ’Ž).

  • Starting for Free: The Free Plan provides a standard monthly refill to 50 ๐Ÿ’Ž on the first of each month. Additionally, you earn 1 bonus diamond for every daily login, allowing free users to build up a budget for premium features.
  • How it Works: Standard puzzles and re-solving errors in Mistake Review cost 1 ๐Ÿ’Ž. Custom simulations cost 15 ๐Ÿ’Ž. High-speed training like the 2-Minute Rush costs 10 ๐Ÿ’Ž, while Survival mode costs 20 ๐Ÿ’Ž.
  • Suit Combinations: These cost 1 ๐Ÿ’Ž to unlock, but once solved, they are free to replay forever.
  • Membership Tiers: If you need more “fuel,” the Gold Plan ($10/mo) offers 500 ๐Ÿ’Ž, while the Platinum Plan ($25/mo) provides Unlimited ๐Ÿ’Ž.

At this time, there are no options to win diamonds. Maybe in the future?

ELO Rating System

Your ELO is a numerical skill rating that quantifies your proficiency in making optimal bidding and opening-lead decisions. Named after the system used in chess, it adjusts dynamically as you solve puzzles: consistently choosing the double-dummy optimal play (5 stars) will see your rating climb, while less accurate choices cause it to dip. This rating serves as a data-backed reflection of your bridge instincts, allowing you to track your improvement over time and providing the basis for your ranking in the competitive Weekly Leagues.

Elo is named after its creator, Arpad Elo, a Hungarian-American physics professor and chess master who developed the system in the 1960s to improve the way the United States Chess Federation (USCF) ranked its players.
